BUGGY BUILDING RULES

An art buggy is a vehicle that creates art as you race it. The competition is judged on speed, art, and ingenuity.

1. Buggys can be built entirely from scratch or combine ready-made elements together. Points are awarded for creative reuse of recycled materials. Be crazy! Be creative!

2. The buggy vehicle must create its own art unaided by the buggy driver or team members. (i.e. Sitting in a shopping cart and drawing a picture while a teammate races the cart around the course, that doesn't count.)

3. The only limitation for what qualifies as ‘art' is that it must be of a tangible form. That is, there must be something physical to show the judges and the crowd after each heat. (Procedural art forms, like buggies that emit lights and sounds as they race are encouraged and can earn you ingenuity points, but they won't count as 'art' in this competition.)

4. A Buggy must maintain contact with the ground at all times during a heat.

5. A maximum of 3 Buggy-drivers are permitted to drive a Buggy during a heat.

6. Buggys are to be foot powered - either pushed or pulled with human legs. Pedal power is also allowed. No gas or electric power can be used to propel the Buggy forward.

7. Electricity (from battery or solar) can be used to aid in the generation of the art.

8. No gas powered anything!

THE MAIN EVENT

1st Rounds: The first heat will consist of a giant race between multiple teams.

2nd Rounds: The winners from the first round will be randomly paired together for a set of one-on-one heats. (See below for format of one-on-one heats.)

Additional Rounds: One-on-one heats will continue in elimination style until there are just two Buggys remaining. T

Final Round: The last two Buggys standing will compete. The winner of that race is declared the Art Buggy Derby winner and is awarded the first prize ($500 CASH 1st Prize, $250 CASH 2nd Prize).

THE THREE RING CIRCUS!  (NEW THIS YEAR)

Those Buggys that are eliminated in the ‘Main Event’ rounds will be eligible to compete for special awards in the “Three Ring Circus!” Three ring circus races will take on the same format as the one-on-one heats in the main event. Contenders in the three ring circus compete for other special awards (e.g. gift certificates and smaller prizes) in one of these many categories:

CROWD FAVORITE
BADDEST ASS BUGGY
CUTEST BUGGY
SLOWEST BUGGY
TOTALLY BUGGED OUT BUGGY
MOST RUBE GOLDBERG-ESQUE

ONE-ON-ONE HEATS

(Applies to Main event hears and Three Ring Circus Heats)

1. Two Art Buggys and their drivers take positions at the starting line.

2. A horn sounds the start of the heat.

3. Drivers circle an obstacle at the end of a strait-away and will race back to the starting line.

4. After each heat, each Buggy-driver presents their Buggy's art to the judges as well as the crowd.

5. The Buggy with the most points wins the heat and advances to the next round. Remember!: Your Buggy may end up competing in multiple heats so be sure that your Buggy is durable enough for more than one race and that you bring enough materials to create more than one piece of art. Your buggy will be judged based on speed and art. Be conscious of both!
